I visisted Um Pyant Refugee Camp, Mae Sot, Thailand on 26th Nov, 2007. The way to it is very fantastic and very enjoyable as the bus pass through mountains. Top parts of the mountains are snow caped, streets are curvy and i feels too cold siting back part of the bus. I call back my homeland seeing the scenes of mountains and deep forest which look the way to my native land. Bus take us slowly passing streams and mountains and takes about two hours, eventually we get to Camp.
Frankly, i've never thought that i'll meet my close friends in that Camp. "Some facts are more stranger than fiction" as a saying goes, i encounter pretty strange thing in it. One of my childhood friends is being an abbot of that Camp who has been there for three years and now waiting to move to Europe thank to UN. Another monk with whom i studied English at the American Center in Yangon and the other Mon novice studied at UMA Spoken English Class in Seikanthar St. I had wonderful moment there reminiscing and talking previous events with them.
Due to political crisise and surpression of dictator in our land, we are sepratated and our furture become blur and goals become further. Population in that Camp is over twenty thousand who departed their homeland with grief and tears by the surpression and exploition of military junta. Some of their villages were set in fire, farms were confiscated and peaceful lovers and social workers were threaten and arrested by political reasons.
If there is no UN and Europion Communities, i cannot imagine how the Burmen will stand. Now, thank to UN the refugees can shelter safe and sound in various Camps and can dream their furture in Europe to build new life.
I stayed there for four days and couldn't have sound sleep for the weather is too cold. To be honest, i cannot forget that days i spent there. They all are lucky enough and their lives are much better than most villagers in Burma in security, living standard, health care and enducation.
I'm thinking of myself in camplife because i took part a demonstration before the Burma Embassy in BKK and sure, my passport will be banned.
May dictatorship end up soon, not only in Burma but all over the world......
